Inner and Outer Sanctuary

On 4 February 2022, the exhibition of graphic artist and painter Éva Mayer – recipient of the Munkácsy Prize – opened at the FiguratiF Gallery of the MaJel Rovás Centre in Košice (Alžbetina 42, Košice, Slovakia).

The exhibited works are special prints. Éva Mayer uses a unique technique that she has developed recently: using a classical watercolour process, she applies the basic patterns onto glass plates, then she scans and digitally processes the images, inverting the colours. This process produces images resembling X-ray scans – it gives everyday objects a dreamlike glow.

In her works, Éva Mayer is not afraid to ask questions considered to be taboo in society. For example, she explores the reuse of sacral and desacralized spaces (churches) in relation to contemporary art, religion and Central and Eastern European identity. She also presents the problem of infertility and the difficulties of getting pregnant, which is an issue resonating in society. A sense of sacredness also permeates Éva Mayer's earlier work; however, this is rather natural and evident, never intrusive.

The exhibition is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm at the FiguratiF Gallery in Košice, until 1 March 2022.
